Review Your Budget After Changing Banks

Keep recurring payments and spending records connected through an account switch.

Changing banks can make an ordinary month look unusual. Deposits and payments may move at different times, and a transfer between your own accounts can be mistaken for income or spending.

Map the recurring flows

List salary deposits, automatic payments, subscriptions, and transfers before closing an old account. Confirm each provider has the new details. Leave enough funds for any payment that still clears the old account.

Separate transfers from expenses

A move between your own accounts does not change the amount you spent. Label it clearly in your records and check both sides of the transfer so monthly spending totals do not become inflated.

Reconcile a full cycle

Compare statements from both accounts over at least one bill cycle. Look for missed direct debits, duplicate charges, or refunds sent to the old account. Update your budget only after the transition picture is complete.
