Track Preorders and Deposits Without Double Counting

Keep future purchases clear when you pay in stages.

A preorder or deposit spreads one purchase across several dates. Tracking only the first payment can hide the balance still due, while recording the full price twice can overstate spending.

Record the commitment

Note the total agreed price, amount already paid, expected final payment, and delivery or event date. Keep the terms for cancellation, refunds, and price changes with the order confirmation.

Budget for the unpaid balance

Treat the remaining amount as a future commitment, even if it has not left your account. Set aside money according to the due date and check whether taxes or shipping will be added later.

Reconcile at completion

When the final charge appears, compare all payments with the total on the final receipt. If an order changes or is cancelled, update both the commitment and any refund actually received.
